Sniffle, Sniffle

It was such a long day at work today. It wasn't horribly busy or anything. But, today, at around 11 am, a kitty died.

His name was Sam. He was a 16 year old siamese cat. He had never had any health problems, and was in the office today because his eyes were dry. He wasn't producing enough moisture in his tears. We gave the owners medicine to use, and they were paying the bill when Sam started to seize. He started clawing and biting his owner, started crying and then went completely limp. He stopped breathing. Despite doing CPR and giving oxygen and adreneline, we couldn't revive him. He had a heart attack and died.

It was so unnerving to see that happen. It's one thing when an animal is put to sleep, but totally different watching an animal die by a heart attack.

In other animal news, there was a dog that was hit by a car last night. He doesn't have any broken bones or internal bleeding, but there is severe nerve damage to his right front leg. He will permanently limp on it. There was another dog that came in last night that had internal bleeding after a surgury. The bleeding has stopped (we wrapped his abdomen very tightly to stop the bleeding). But he now has an infection in his penis. It was wrapped up with his abdomen, and it rubbed raw and bloody against the wrap. He also had a little accident, and things got infected. This dog is such an incredibly good dog--he's a pitbull, but he doesn't bark, he doesn't bite, he didn't put up any sort of fight when we wrapped him or started an IV (even when we had to try 5 different times, with a 3 inch catheter). He has such a great personality that I might steal him. :) When he gets better, of course.

In fun animal news, I did get to drain a hematoma today. A cat came in with a very swollen ear, filled with mite-filled wax. This poor kitty couldn't hear very well because of all of the blockages. But I did get to open the ear and squeeze out all of the blood and clots. I made a huge mess, but the cat feels much better. And he can hear better.
